It's More Than a Race

Since its founding in 1996 by former UC San Diego Chancellor Robert C. Dynes, the Triton 5K (formerly the Chancellor's Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars) has raised more than $3.8 million in undergraduate scholarship support, benefiting more than 1,000 motivated and ambitious students. Now in its 22nd year, the Triton 5K continues to expand scholarships, ensuring that learning is accessible and affordable for all.

Enhancing the student experience is a key priority of the Campaign for UC San Diego, our comprehensive fundraising effort to empower the next generation of innovators to blaze a new path toward revolutionary ideas, unexpected answers, lifesaving discoveries and planet-changing impact.

Join us for the Triton 5K, and together we’ll continue the nontradition — our legacy of challenging convention. We can’t do it without you.

Meet Triton 5K Scholars

Jasmine Chiang, Class of 2019

This past summer, I worked as a Peer Facilitator for a program called the Summer Engineering Institute. This was the first year of this program, which lasted 5 weeks and allowed the participants, which were incoming freshmen in the engineering department, to come together and take a class in coding, as well as a class in their respective field. As Peer Facilitator, I was a Resident Advisor of sorts for these students, and I worked to help them adjust to college life and make a community that is there to support them when actual college began this year. This coming year I will work to continue fostering those connections, as a mentor.

James F. Grizzle, Class of 2018

I would like to humbly and graciously thank you for your continued support of my undergraduate education at UC San Diego! As I begin my third year, I continue to contemplate on the nature of your generosity and how it has transformed my life.

Last year, I continued my studies in the field of economics and also made the decision to declare a minor in African American Studies. The flexibility that the Triton 5K Scholarship has provided me by removing financial concerns has been absolutely crucial. While I am senior-standing, I have not yet decided what comes next; I may choose to graduate this year, or I may choose to wait another year.

Alexandria Holl, Class of 2020

Thank you for the opportunity granted through your support of the Chancellor's Scholarship. When I first started looking into colleges, money was an issue-- I worried about my ability to pay for schooling and loans, and, though I applied to UC San Diego, it was a leap when I decided to attend in the fall despite this.

Your gracious donations bring me closer to my future-- a future in which I plan to earn a degree in Clinical Psychology, attend graduate school, earn a Ph.D., and help others. I hope not only to be a practicing psychologist, but to work with those in countries that have yet to recognize persons struggling with mental illnesses and afflictions-- and when I achieve this, I will still be grateful for the help you have provided.
